Walk Cycle from Andrew Sherman on .

Spider Animation

I have no idea what happened when I uploaded it but the video looks crazy. You can still see the movement in the legs and the jump. Watch a few times to see everything it happens pretty quick

The Story Development

Animatic .

Premise: What if you could see a better place but couldn’t get to it?

Treatment: OPENING SCENE – THE SHED SPIDER 1,

Fixing his web scurries round and round. A short distance away, he notices SPIDER 2, a spider of the same species but a different coloring pattern. Spider 2 checks his silk strands making sure his web is strong and ready to catch the next bug that tests its luck. However, down under the table where the two spiders live there are no bugs flying. They are easily avoided, almost mocked by the flies and moths.

UNDER THE TABLE

Spider 1 makes a ball out of silk and flings it at spider 2. Spider 1 yells “Ever since you got here I haven’t caught a single Fly!” Spider 2 moves over to the ball of silk stuck in his web picks it up and throws it back yelling “Maybe you’re the cause of the problem not me”. Spider 1 fed up with his newfound enemy Decides it is time to take action. He lowers himself on a single strand of silk and starts swinging back and forth. Spider 2 sees what is about to happen and moves to the middle of his web and prepares to jump. Spiders 1 enraged with his enemy gets enough momentum and lets go. Soaring through the air spider 1 and spider 2 meet in a fury of legs and silk they tumble to the floor of the shed landing in dust and old grass clippings.

THE FLOOR OF THE SHED

A small dust cloud has risen from the spiders hitting the floor of the shed. They are now rolling around trying to pin each other down and tie each others legs together. One of the spiders over powers the other and then he is reversed and pinned to the ground. Spider 1 attempts to tie spider 2’s legs together but ends up tying both of the spiders to each other. There is a sound of insects flying. Spider 2 attempts to climb up the table leg back to his web, but spider 1 lasso’s his legs and yanks him off the table leg causing him to fall down directly on top of spider 1. There is a bright reflection of light. After the dust has settled from spider 2’s fall they both see where the light is coming from. They both see the perfect place for a web. There was a window on the side of the shed and one of the panes has been broken out. How had they now noticed this before. This is how the insects had been flying in and out. This is what has caused there famine. This is what will make them king of the shed. They both know they have to get to this empty window pane first. The race has begun.

MIDDLE OF FLOOR

Spider 1 flips onto his feet, he knows he is going to get there first. Kicking up a cloud of dust he makes his run across the floor. He scurrys over a rake under a ladder and over to a bench that sits under the window. He stares up knowing he is close to the king of this shed. Meanwhile spider2 had been close on his tail. He had run over the rake and jumped up onto the ladder to see how far his opponent had gotten. There he was sitting by the bench leg this was his chance to get ahead. He jumped down from the ladder reached back and grabbed the end of his silk made a quick little knot with his legs, and with a great heave he threw it at spider 1. It was a great toss it landed right on top of spider 1’s eyes getting tangled on him. Spider 2 made his break, he ran over to spider 1 and jumped off his back using him as a spring board to get him a good start going up the bench’s leg. He climbed like he had never climbed before. Higher and Higher until he was almost there. He reached his first leg on top of the bench. He had never felt so good. Leg after leg until he had just one left.

THE BENCH

Spider 2 was bringing his last leg on to the top of the bench when it suddenly felt strangely heavy. He tried again to pull it up but it just was not happening. He started losing his grip, he was being pulled backwards by his leg. Spider 1 had caught his leg with a line of silk. He was not going to let him get to the window that easy. Spider 1 gave one big pull and yanked spider 2 right off the edge of the bench. With a thud spider 2 hit the ground slightly dazed by the fall. Trying to bring himself together he heard spider 1 laugh and start his ascent to the top of the bench. Spider 1 flew up the leg of the bench and was standing on top in no time at all. He looked up at the window where he would call his new home. He knew he had to be quick and ran to the windowsill. Spider 2 crawled on top of the bench and with no time to spare quickly sprayed all the silk he could muster up onto spider 1. Spider 1 was stuck. There was no way he was going to get out of this mess quickly. All of his legs were tangled he couldn’t barely move he knew it was over. Spider 2 let out a laugh. He knew he could make it the window first, But he wanted to rub it in. Spider 1 tried to untangle himself and see what was Spider 2 was doing be he could not get a clear view of the commotion. When spider 1 finally got a clear view, he saw what spider 2 had done. He had made himself a trampoline to launch himself up to the top of the window where the broken out pane was.

THE JUMP

Spider 1 still trying to get his last few legs untangled knew it was over. He even thought maybe he should just head straight back to his old web and not look back. It wasn’t that bad after all he even kind of enjoyed the simple life down there. Spider 2 had walked back a few steps admiring his trampoline and preparing for the jump. With a deep breath he start to run towards it. He shuffled his legs and jumped high into the air to make sure he got enough momentum to get himself up to the perfect spot in the window. He landed perfect in the middle of trampoline it couldn’t have been more picture perfect jump. Spider 1 could barely force himself to watch how it would end. He could just picture spider 2 looking down and laughing at him. The trampoline stretched to the bench and flung spider 2 through the air. He was on his way to being the king of the shed. He flew through the air with great speed and a big smile on his face. Up, and Up he was almost there. Almost to the best place for a spider web he had ever seen. Spider 1 watched spider 2 flying through the air with astonishment that he had lost the race. Then something started to look funny to spider 1. It looked like spider 2 was going a little to high and a little to fast. Spider 2 noticed he wasn’t slowing down as the window was approaching fast. He was startled, he started moving his legs all about in an effort to slow down but it was no help. As spider 1 looked on shaking off the last of the silk from his legs spider 2 flew up and straight out the window. Spider 1 shook is head and thought it was an illusion. It couldn’t have happened. He couldn’t have just flew straight out the window. It was like a king being crowned. Spider 1 jumped with joy and started crawling up to the window pane. When he got to the illustrious location he peered out the window to the yard below, but didn’t see spider 2. With a sigh of relief he knew he had just won the race. He was the new king of this shed. He started to make his web and before he knew it he had too many flies and bugs stuck in his web than he knew what to do with.

Homework #1

ToonBoom Ball Bounce from Andrew Sherman on Vimeo.

Ball Bounce Maya from Andrew Sherman on Vimeo.

After creating both of these ball bounces I found the Toonboom one to be the easier of the two for me. I assume it was easier for me because I figured out the program a little quicker than Maya. Im sure if I knew more about maya and the graph editor I would have been able to create a more believable ball bounce. After creating both of the ball bounces I went back into Toonboom and messed around creating my own little comic animation. Toonboom is a surprisingly simple and fun to use program. I see myself possibly using it in the future to create a little project or something for fun.
